We hope this film is a fun ride for the audience! We worked extra hard to make a film that delivers on our Spider character and the thrills and chills you’d expect with our title Itsy Bitsy. Our treatment of the Spider was to make sure it was as plausible and thought out as any other actor in our film. We did everything possible with practical effects to enhance the realism of the film so that when people leave the theater they saw a living creature.
At its dramatic core our film is about motherhood and all the challenges and ambivalence that come with parenthood. Kara is a single mother and while she’s looking for a fresh start she instead must face her past failures and fight for redemption. She must become the mother lion and fight for her children but first she must let go of the past and forgive herself. We are not perfect beings and in that acceptance is beauty.
Because it takes so long to make independent movies, we wrote this and started shooting this film before the current trend of female driven narratives. It was shocking to me the resistance we met with at the time in a genre with a long history of female protagonists. I was warned not to make this film and even offered significant money to go a different direction. It’s vindicating to have this film come out now and we hope audiences enjoy our love letter to mothers and feel the excitement of the fun creature popcorn movies we recall from younger years.
Yours in Suspense, Micah Gallo, director of Itsy Bitsy
